So much is happening over the next 3 months, tomorrow I have the Pro-Manchester Creative Conference, laying out how creative innovation is shaping the Northwest. On 26th, it’s the Future of Media conference, also in Manchester. We’ve also got an Audio Hack coming up at the MediaCity Immersive Technologies Innovation Hub on Oct 8! On 15 Oct, we have the BRILLIANT Festival in Liverpool, shortly followed by the Manchester Science Festival on 17th.

It has been a wild month of preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Just back and pretty exhausted and glad to be in quieter surroundings. Now is a time for reflecting, writing, and organizing everything that happened. Really happy with how everything went with Games Time News, providing the outlet for my posts, we got a lot done and more will come out post-Games. I managed to publish 2 articles during the Games for The Conversation, which bookend the Games. Working on a couple more, which also connect in with the Paralympic Games. We have a lot going on at the MediaCity Immersive Technologies Innovation Hub, so keep an eye on our LinkedIn. Also, prep now for the new teaching term in September and the BEYOND conference in November!

The month kicked off with hosting a conversation on artificial intelligence at the always amazing Edinburgh Science Festival. The following week, I was giving two talks at Sport Accord in Birmingham focused on emerging technologies. We’ve had various events at the MediaCity Immersive Technologies Innovation Hub on spatial computing and I’ll be speaking on Creative AI for the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities this month too. Gearing up for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games gradually too!

We have so much happening this week, first of all on 1st March is the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology AI Expo, for which I’m delivering a virtual talk. On 4th March, we have a university roundtable on AI, to launch our AI Fringe programme. On 6th, we’ve got an event for the MediaCity Immersive Technologies Innovation Hub focused on gaming. We’ve another for the AI Fringe, called Teach AI - a campaign to embed AI learning across the university. On 7th, I’m giving a talk for our University Fellows about my career. On 12th-13th, we have an event with the Manchester Animation Festival, also associated with MITIH. On 21st, we have an event as part of International Women’s Day, which I’m helping to facilitate, working with GCHQ and The Female Lead. More later!

What a start to February, beginning by hosting TEDx University of Salford, organizing a visiting lecture from Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, and speaking at the Economist Sports Integrity Summit in just the first 9 days! I was also at the National STEM Learning Centre in York and we’ve been holding more interviews for the MediaCity Immersive Technologies Innovation Hub. Writing focused on the biopolitics of Neuralink and a new book contract I have about the Metaverse, so watch this space for that!
2024.01
The year has started with a bang, with some great events happening, including our Artificial Intelligence Jam for the MediaCity Immersive Technologies Hub. On 31st Jan, the MediaCity Immersive Technologies Hub has its Funding Jam too! We also have the TEDx University of Salford event coming up on 3 Feb and a very exciting talk from Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell on International Women and Girls in Science Day on 6th Feb! We recently held our FameLab training too, which was a really lovely event! Looking forward to seeing the submissions. Confirmed I’ll be speaking at Edinburgh Science Festival in April and Sport Accord, which will be really exciting.
2023.12
It’s turned into a very busy month with the launch of the MediaCity Immersive Technologies Hub, the hosting of the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures livestream, keynote for the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology, and a keynote for the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures livestream event at the National STEM Learning Centre in York!
2023.10
This month, we’ve got some exciting new activities associated with the MediaCity Immersive Technologies Hub, including new staff members and a range of events happening in MediaCity. Also, very focused on writing about artificial intelligence and immersive technologies. This month the IOC also announced that they are exploring an Olympic Esports Games, which is also very exciting.
2023.08
This month has become the classic academic non-leave leave, but managing to get some writing done, which is an absolute relief. So much admin at the mo, but also some exciting developments for our newly formed MediaCity Immersive Technologies Innovation Hub, which now has a LinkedIn group. We’ve been advertising a number of roles lately and interviews are taking place in the first week of Sept. Also writing a lot about ethics and artificial intelligence, along with metaverse and esports. Prep for Paris 2024 Olympic Games work too currently high on agenda. Enjoyed watching Barbie and Oppenheimer recently, published a piece in the Times Higher about Oppenheimer. Hoping a piece on Barbie will follow.
2023.06
This month is absolutely packed with speaking engagements, here’s a run down. First off was a talk for Oxford University on communicating research, which covered everything from covid-19 on TikTok to using metaverse world and gaming to reach new audiences. Next was the Youth Marketing Strategy conference in London, which focused on how brands are innovating with metaverse environments, trying to find their way into a new set of cultural experiences in which people engage with their brands in a very different way. The following week, I was at the AICPA-CIMA Engage Conference in London, speaking about the metaverse, young people and digital wellness. I need to get back to this more, as there’s such a desire to talk about the subject. This week, we have the KitPlus event in Manchester and it’s the start of Olympic Esports Week in Singapore. Sadly, I can’t make it, but will be covering what’s taking place. The final week of June, we’ve a bumper pack of events in Salford, including the Media Meet Up, the Pioneers in XR and the Vera’s Not Alone premiere. I’m also speaking on ethics at the North of England Robotics Innovation Centre event on Artificial Intelligence this month, which will be of use especially if you are part of an SME seeking to develop innovative projects in this are. Finally, I’ll be moderating at the SEG3 event in London on 29th, focusing on metaverse, gaming and esports.
