Why did The Enhanced Games flop?
This thoughtful article by Thierry Ménissier, Fabien Ohl, and Patrick Trabal does an excellent job of laying out the problem with the Enhanced Games. They quote my perspective on wanting to encourage debate about the ethics of human enhancement.
I remain of the view that humanity’s pursuit of longer, healthier lives, leads to a contradictory moment for sports, which will be difficult to navigate. We may be getting closer to this point, but there is so much that is bad about The Enhanced Games, that it does not correspond to the arguments I make or the world I imagine.
Sports, medicine, and society do need to keey a closer eye on the shift in public consciousness about lifestyle enhancements and the industry growing around the pursuit of biotechnological and biomedical interventions which may shift the dial of public opinion on doping.
However, in this case, the more pressing point is who sits around the Games. I’ve seen various interviews where the organizers talk about the ‘corrupt’ world of sport and I tend to think, if someone is saying ‘everyone is corrupt except us’, then these are the people you need to worry about.
