Probable Futures

How will artificial intelligence shape the future of policing and law enforcement?

Oversight Committee

PROBabLE Futures — Probabilistic AI Systems in Law Enforcement Futures — is a £3.4M, four-year Keystone Project funded by Responsible AI UK, led by Northumbria University in collaboration with Glasgow, Northampton, Leicester, Cambridge and Aberdeen universities.

The project tackles one of the most pressing questions in AI governance today: how do we ensure that probabilistic AI systems — tools that deal in likelihoods and predictions, not certainties — are used responsibly, fairly, and accountably in policing and the criminal justice system?

Much of my work over the years has sat at exactly this intersection: the ethical, cultural, and social questions that emerge when new technologies meet real-world institutions and human lives. AI in law enforcement is one of the highest-stakes arenas we face right now, and the gap between deployment and governance is one we can't afford to leave open.

Looking forward to contributing to this important work alongside an exceptional interdisciplinary team.
